A number of vessels have either missed out calls at Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, or have given up and and continued on their voyages after waiting several days at anchor according to Arab News.
It is reported some six cargo ships left the anchorage without getting entry permission because of a lack of available berths and a port labour shortage.
According to Arab News, shipping agents in Jeddah fear the crisis may continue until the end of the year, as the need for imported goods increases. However, Khaled Bubshait, president of the General Ports Authority, attributed the present crisis to the Kingdom's rapid economic progress and an increased need for imported goods.
The Council of Saudi Chambers of Commerce recently announced a number of measures including the construction of more wharfs and container terminals, more anchoring space and the hring of more workers. Another source confirmed that many shipping lines have diverted their routes without stopping at Jeddah. "They have been doing this because of a lack of unloading facilities and fear of fines"
