Fumigation of Containers destined for Australia Other

Following an EU directive, the chemical Methyl Bromide can no longer be used for fumigation purposes. Methyl Bromide is used by all Carriers, Fumigation Agencies and their sub-contractors. Currently, there are no other approved alternatives (chemicals) to Methyl Bromide. All of the Shipping Companies are still deliberating over this new directive and at this point, in the absence of an alternative, they are all strongly suggesting Exporters use ISPM15 approved pallets and dunnage. On this basis, ALL Carriers serving the UK – Australian trade lane will no longer offer fumigation as a service. This is effective from 18/3/10. Apologies for the short notice but this has literally only just come to light. Some Fumigation Agencies are trying to fight the decision and are taking their fight to their MEP’s. It is unlikely they will be successful in over-turning this decision.

The only current alternatives are as follows:-

a)   Use treated pallets/cases/timbers (to ISPM15 Revised (2009) – The Model Mark - standard).

b)   Use plastic pallets.

c)   Do not use any wood packaging – cardboard cartons or “loose cargo” will be acceptable.
